I was wondering
the other day, What would Nanook do without the dog park?
Well, I think
she would go crazy without the exercise and comradery of the other
animals.
And then I thought,
Actually, what would I do without the dog park? And I realized I have
come to enjoy the park as much as Nanook does.
What better way
is there to spend a bright, sunny day than at the park as I watch
her play with the other dogs and visit with people who have become
good friends. In fact, some of the nicest people I know can be found
at the Dog Park
The park serves
many different purposes for those of us who like to spend time there.
One sweet lady who a has an ill husband brings her Dalmatian every
day.
She says it helps
her to cope when she can get out and visit with other pet-lovers.
Another gentleman
says it offers a great outlet after work, helping to relieve the days
stress. His dog could probably get by without the park. But he couldn't.
A man whose well-liked
dog was killed in an accident stopped by to share the news with others
who he knew would care.
A few of us poor
souls will admit that much of our social life involves other dog-
park cronies. Not that this is bad. My life has never been richer.
I never would have met so many diverse people whom I now call friends.
And the friendships
formed at the park often go beyond those fences.
Birthdays are
celebrated. Dog-sitters are exchanged. People help out with other
peoples children. Sick friends are assisted.
When I had surgery
last year, my husband noted that 75% of those whom I heard from by
way of cards, calls, flowers, visits and cookies were originally dog-
park friends.
We recently bought
a house, and one of the main criterion in selecting it was that we
would not be far from the dog park. Informed of this requirement,
the realtor just shrugged and said, Okay. He asked why it made such
a difference to us. I said, Get yourself a dog and stop by the park
on a warm afternoon. Like us, it may change your life.
