Sunset Hooper's Beach
Hooper's Beach
Saturday Oct 28th
C-DOG held a clean-up day at Hooper's Beach in Capitola. Of the two
garbage bags that were filled, there was no
dog poop on the beach. All the more reason to strive to keep
it this way. The team found trash that included styrofoam, cigarette
butts, liquor and beer bottles, broken glass, baby diapers, a prescription
medicine vial, plastic bottles, soda cans, many plastic wrappers and
garden waste in front of the Venetian Courts. "Our kids are dirtier
than our dogs are." said a mother of two pointing to four kids
playing in the sand. An entire family of twelve from Soquel pitched
in and helped out. We've had a great deal of community support: Gayle's
bakery provided a huge box of delicious danish pastries and hot coffee,
Pet Pals donated poop scoops and the city provided plastic bags. C-DOG
sends a big thanks to our friends!
Dogs are still
not allowed on the beach legally. Although we are meeting with the
Capitola Dog Task Force to determine how to proceed. Meetings are
being held in November and December to determine the outcome. See
calendar for details on time and locations.
The meetings are open to the public and your voice counts.
The next clean
up will be on Saturday, November 18th at 10 AM to 11:30 C-DOG Get
Together & Clean Up Day at Depot Hill. Dress in work clothes to suit
the weather and bring a pair of gloves if you have them.. Tools, plastic
bags, latex gloves, hand sanitizer and garbage containers will be
provided. Prizes will be available for the biggest bag of trash.

Capitola's
favorite sports hero is Harry Hooper, lead-off hitter and right fielder
for the 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918 World Champion Red Sox. Harry first
saw Capitola when his parents moved here in the summer of 1907. Years
later, he made his home in the village, and served as postmaster from
1933 until his retirement in 1971. Hooper was inducted into the Baseball
Hall of Fame on August 9, 1971. In this photograph, Hooper (in the
white cap) posed with the local Soquel team.
For
more information about Harry Hooper and Capitola History visit the
local history museum located next to city hall in the old school house
and take one of the walking tours led by Museum Director Carolyn Swift
and her volunteer staff.
